THREE DIFFERENT PLAYS
Theme: Humility and Humanity
JUNE 25 - JULY 21, 2024

Three different award-winning and thought-provoking plays, all taking place in the historic Firehouse Arts and Events Center.

3 PLAYS, 6 NIGHTS A WEEK, FOR 4 WEEKS

Bellingham TheatreWorks, in partnership with The Firehouse Arts and Events Center, The Historic Fairhaven Association, presents three plays in repertory.

All three plays are inspired by this year’s theme: a time for humility and humanity, looking at the social issues of race and discrimination that have entangled our country for generations.

Each of these productions will be performed in the round, so audience members will be sitting in close proximity to the actors.

We are the only theatre in the Pacific Northwest that offers a summer repertory season, and we are thrilled to offer you high-caliber literature and talent this summer.

We also invite the audience to stay and participate in the post-show discussions with community organizations that are addressing issues raised by these plays.

TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD
by Harper Lee
adapted by Christopher Sergel
Directed by Mark Kuntz

This Pulitzer Prize-winning classic by Harper Lee tells the story of a small-town local lawyer Atticus, who defends a young black man in a trial that sends violent waves through the community. Timeless and lingering, this hard-hitting work explores prejudice, compassion and the courage to do what is right.

“[The audience] should feel newly encouraged to effect what changes they can to prevent the forces of intolerance and bigotry from wielding the power they once had… and still do.”

THE THANKSGIVING PLAY
by Larissa FastHorse
Directed by Kayla Adams

This comic satire is currently running in New York, celebrating the first time a Native American woman’s play has been produced on Broadway. The story revolves around four woke white individuals who attempt to create a politically correct First Thanksgiving play for schools.

"The damage is real, both on stages and off, but the playwright strikes the balance between educational and entertaining, without hammering home the reminder.”

THE MOUNTAINTOP
by Katori Hall
Directed by Troy Scarborough

The Mountaintop has been a theater darling since its Broadway debut in 2011. Katori Hall was also the first black woman in history to win the Olivier Award for Best New Play for this fictional depiction of Martin Luther King Jr’s last night on earth, set entirely in Room 306 of the Lorriane Hotel on the eve of his assassination in 1968.

“…see humanity within greatness and imagine what it might mean to reckon with the limits of one’s own influence.”
